Generic Viracept (Nelfinavir)

Nelfinavir is a drug that is used with other medications to reduce HIV infection in the blood. This medicine belongs to the protease class of drugs. It works by lowering the amount of HIV in your blood as a result you will have a better immune system. This way you have reduced chances of contacting new infections and diseases such as cancer. It is important to note that this is not a cure for HIV but an antiretroviral drug.  When using this drug, ensure you practise safe sex. Use condoms and dental dams when having sex, continue to take all HIV medications and avoid sharing personal items such as toothbrushes and needles. Take Nelfinavir as prescribed by your doctor. Read the Medication Guide carefully before you start taking this medicine. This medication is taken two or three times a day. It is taken with or without food. If you find it hard taking Nelfinavir with water,  crush it and take it with food. You can also dissolve this medicine in a small amount of water. After its dissolved, stir well and drink immediately. Rinse the glass to ensure you take the whole dose. When  taking Nelfinavir, refrain from taking apple and orange juice. This may make the medication a little bit bitter. This dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, response to medication and liver function. 

 

Take this medicine at evenly spaced intervals. To help you remember, take it the same time every day. Also, remember to take this medication with other HIV medications as directed by your doctor. Do not skip  or miss the dose as it may increase the amount of virus in your blood. Avoid taking more or less of Nelfinavir than prescribed by your doctor. Doing so will expose you to severe side effects. 

 

Nelfinavir has the following common side effects such as diarrhea and vomiting. Some of the serious side effects include: blurred vision, unexplained weight loss, persistent headaches, trouble breathing, joint pain, irregular heartbeat, slurred speech and drooping face. Seek immediate medical care in case you encounter these side effects. 

 

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if:

• You have heart conditions

• You have liver problems

• You are taking other medicines
