Bupropion

Bupropion is an antidepressant drug that is mainly used in the treatment of depression. It can however also be used to prevent and manage seasonal affective disorder and help addicts to stop smoking. It works by stimulating increased activity of the brains natural chemicals. These chemicals are use by the nerves to communicate. It is available in brand name and generic forms. Some common brand names of the drug include Zyban, Wellbutrin SR and XL, Forfivo XL, and Aplenzin.

Dosage

This drug is administered orally and comes either as an extended release (XL) tablet or an instant release tablet (RL). The instant release tablet works very fast while the extended version is periodically released into your body.

Usage

This drug can be taken in two different ways depending on the doctor’s instructions. 3 times a day with each dose at least six hours apart.  4 times a day at least four hours apart. The RL tablets can be taken twice daily, eight hours apart. The XL tablets should be taken once daily. The medication should be taken with food to avoid an upset stomach. Administration time of the drug should be consistent. This drug should be taken whole, do not try to crush it, split or chew. The drug should not be taken too close to bedtime. This antidepressant is usually prescribed for 2 weeks.

Side effects

This drug comes with certain side effects. The general side effects include;

·       Sweating

·       vomiting

·       dry mouth

·       headache

·       agitation

·       nausea

·       dizziness

·       constipation

If any of these side effects persist, promptly consult a doctor. There are however more serious side effects that are related to this drug and usually come as a black box warning for both doctors and patients. These serious effects include;

·       Mental health effects such as suicide attempts, aggression and anxiety.

·       Eye problems such as swelling, redness and blurred vision.

·       Seizures and loss of consciousness.

Precautions

This drug should be taken with strict instructions from a doctor. Do not take any other alcohol, medication, herbs or vitamins with Bupropion. People with mental conditions such as bipolar should avoid this drug. This drug should also be kept far away from the reach of children, seniors and pregnant women
