Phenergan is an antihistamine drug. This medication works by altering actions of chemicals in your brain. The drug belongs to the phenothiazines group of drugs. It blocks histamine in the body. It is for this reason that Phenergan is used to treat various allergies such as sneezing, itching, hives, skin rashes, running nose and watery eyes. Phenergan is also used to cure nausea, vomiting, post surgery pain, sleeping problems and motion sickness.
Dosage:
When taking Phenergan ,you must adhere to instructions given by your doctor. Adults who undergo allergic reactions are supposed to take either 1.25or 25mg of Phenergan at bedtime. They may also take about 6.25mg to 12.5 mg three times a day. The normal dose for adults who experience nausea or vomiting is 12.5 to 25mg in four to six hours. Those going through motion sickness can consume 25mg in thirty to sixty minutes before departure. You must take the drug every twelve hours. Children older than two years should be given 0.1mg after six years in daytime and 0.5mg at bedtime. This can be done through the mouth or insertion in the rectal. For children aged two years and above experiencing motion sickness, they can take 0.5mg thirty minutes prior to departure. Give 0.25-1mg dose to children older than two years who are going through nausea complications.
Usage:
Phenergan is always taken before bed or meals. In surgery it is taken at night prior to the surgery. For motion sickness, Phenergan is always administered within an hour before departure. Ensure you measure liquid medicine using a medicine cup to get the correct dose. When using Phenergan, remember to store it at room temperature away from light, heat and moisture. Also, before undergoing tests, inform your doctor that you are using Phenergan.
Side Effects:
Some of the common side effects experienced by taking Phenergan include: blurred vision, dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, seizures, rapid or slow heartbeats, jaundice, bleeding from the gum or nose, hallucinations, feeling weak and swelling of the face, lips, throat and tongue.
