Linezolid (Zyvox) is a drug that is used to treat bacterial infections. This medicine belongs to the MAO class of drugs. It works by blocking the growth and spread of bacteria in the body. This medication is ideal in treating bacteria and not viral infections such as flu. When using this drug, avoid taking other antibiotics because they may reduce the effectiveness of Zyvox. Also, do not take too much of this medicine as it may cause serious side effects. 

Dosage

Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Zyvox is usually taken by mouth with or without food. It is taken every twelve hours daily. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children however, the dosage is based on weight and age. Children are given this dose every eight hours. When using this drug, avoid taking foods that are rich in Tyramine. They include: sausages, meat and preserved fish. Avoid products that are super rich in yeast such as homemade bread. In addition, refrain from eating food that has high levels of soybean such as tofu and red wine. You can contact your doctor to get a detailed list on other foods you should avoid. Make sure you take a proper diet to reduce the risk of getting high blood pressure. 

Usage

Take this medication at spaced intervals. Almost all antibiotics work well when the levels of medicine in your body is kept at constant levels. Do not increase medication other than prescribed. Doing so will increase your risk to side effects and even worse your condition will deteriorate. Inform your doctor if your condition worsens or persists. 

Side Effects

The common side effects of using Zyvox include: nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting and headache. The serious side effects of using this medication are: blurred vision, seizure, sweating, stomach pain and mood swings. Contact your doctor immediately for help.
