Generic Indocin contains indomethacin or indomethacin as an active ingredient in it. It is basically NSAID or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The mechanism of action of the drug is the non-selective inhibition of COX or cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 enzymes. These enzymes are involved in the formation of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. The process of inflammation is dependent on the production of prostaglandins besides many other effects like analgesic effect and antipyretic effect.
It is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for inflammation, pain, fever, and swelling of different body parts.
Usage:
Generic Indocin is used for several conditions that involve inflammation like inflammation of bursa and joints, gout, pseudogout, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile arthritis, Paget's' disease, osteoarthritis and Bartter syndrome.
Other conditions treated by indomethacin include myoglobinuria, headache, migraine, pericarditis, renal colic, tendinitis, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, trigeminal neuralgia etc.
It is also helpful in certain gynecological conditions like dysmenorrhea, to delay the preterm labor, polyhydramnios, and to help in the closure of patent ductus arteriosus. Also, it is a drug of choice for fever and pain in chronic and malignant diseases.
Contraindications:
The drug is contraindicated in children under the age of 2 years and in certain medical conditions like peptic ulcer or history of peptic ulcer, nasal polyps, hypertension, severe liver disease, renal disease, bleeding disorder, severe bone marrow disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and other psychotic diseases.
If you are allergic to the drug or to other NSAIDS, it should not be taken. Also if the patient is taking drugs like potassium-sparing diuretic or lithium salts, indomethacin is not taken.

• Edema
• Hypertension
• Lithium toxicity producing depression or bipolar disorders
• Electrolyte abnormalities like hyperkalemia and hypernatremia
• Dizziness
• Hearing loss
• Tinnitus
• Blurred vision
• Acute renal failure
• Nephrotic syndrome
• Nephritis
• Headache
• Vertigo
• Angioedema
• Sweating
• Tachycardia
• Hypotension
• Hepatitis
• Photosensitivity
• Psychosis
• Acute bronchospasm
Precautions:
If you are allergic to the drug or has a history of allergy to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs, let your doctor know.
If you are planning the pregnancy or are pregnant, tell your doctor as the drug can have severe effects on the baby.
To avoid the stomach upset symptoms caused by indomethacin, the drug should be taken with some antacids and proton pump inhibitors.
Also if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, let your doctor know.
If you are taking another medication for any other disease or any supplements or over the counter medication tell your doctor to avoid drug reactions.
