Pravastatin is used to treat cholesterol found in blood. This drugs belongs to the 'statins' type of drugs. Together with a good diet, the drug is used to reduce or raise cholesterol levels in the blood when necessary. Pravastatin works by reducing cholesterol levels produced by the liver. The medication can also increase cholesterol hence reducing the chances of developing heart problems such as heart attacks and strokes. Besides using this medication, proper exercising is important.
Dosage:
Take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage is usually administered based on one's medical condition, age and response to therapy. You are allowed to take Pravastatin with or without food. This medicine is take once on a daily basis. Doctors have however advised that Pravastatin be taken during evening periods for better results. If you are using other drugs that reduce cholesterol, take this drug between intervals of one and four hours respectively. It is advisable to take this drug regularly to get the best out of it. Also, take Pravastatin the same time each day.
Usage:
Continue to use this medication up to four weeks depending on your doctor's advice. Do not discontinue treatment unless your doctor recommends you to do the same. Remember to avoid red yeast rice products when using Pravastatin. These rice products may contain statin which increases your chances of developing liver problems.
Side Effects:
Pravastatin has minor side effects. These are: sudden weakness, muscle problems, vomiting, kidney or liver complications, muscle pain and stomach upset. However seek medical advice if you experience serious itching, trouble breathing, dizziness, rashes and swelling of the lips, tongue and throat.

Before using Pravastatin, inform your doctor if:
You have liver or kidney disease
You are using alcohol
You have any allergies
You are pregnant
You are using any other drugs that may interact with Pravastatin such as colchicine
