The active ingredient present in generic Invokana is canagliflozin. It is the drug for diabetes mainly that belongs to the group gliflozin. The mechanism of action of the group revolves around the inhibition of sodium-glucose transport proteins type 2 (SGLT2) channels in the kidneys. These channels are mainly responsible for the reabsorption of more than 90 percent of glucose in the urine. Hence, its inhibition leads to the increased release of glucose in the urine and helps to maintain the blood glucose levels.
Dosage:
The drug is mainly available in oral tablet form in the dosage of 100mg and 300 mg. it is given once daily usually in the morning time and should be taken on the same time every day. It should be taken according to the advice of the doctor and should not be increased or decreased on your own.
The levels of sugar should be checked daily several times to save the patient from hypoglycemia. Also, liver function test and kidney function tests are done while you are taking the drug.
Usage:
The drug canagliflozin is used for the treatment of diabetes type 2. It provides a better glucose level control but is effective only with diet control and exercise. Also, the drug is used in combination rather alone to help it function more precisely.
Contraindication:
As the drug acts on the kidney to help in the removal of excessive blood glucose, it cannot be used in ever kidney disease when renal function is impaired. Also if the patient is on dialysis, Invokana cannot be used.
In cases of type 1 diabetes, the drug is contraindicated. Also if the patient is having diabetic ketoacidosis, it is not a recommended drug, in which case insulin is the drug of choice. The drug is not given to the patients under 18 years of age. Also, the drug can pass into the breast milk so should not be given to the lactating mother.
Side effects:
Like every other drug, Invokana also produces some side effects like:

• Hypoglycemia i.e. low blood sugar levels
• Increased cholesterol level
• Candidiasis of female genital tract
• Glycosuria i.e. increased amount of glucose in the urine
• Polyuria
• Urinary tract infection
• Diabetic ketoacidosis
• Low blood pressure
• Blurred vision
• Anxiety
• Lightheaded feeling
• Blood in urine
• Painful urination
• Sore throat
• Stuffy nose
• Back pain
Precautions:
There are certain conditions in which the drug should be used carefully. You should let your doctor know if you are having a kidney disease, liver disease or a history of these diseases. If you are having high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, low blood pressure or any other heart problem tell your doctor.
Also if you are having bladder cancer, this drug is taken with precaution. In case you are taking insulin or other medicines for diabetes, tell your doctor.
If you are taking medicine for blood pressure, tell your doctor. Also if you are pregnant or planning the pregnancy, let your doctor know.
