Glibenclamide, also known as glyburide belongs to the class of drugs known as sulfonylureas and is used as an antidiabetic drug. The drug is administered orally in the form of tablets. The drug should be primarily be used where the diet alone does not control diabetes.
Dosage
The prescribed tablets should be taken as indicated on the leaflet on the drugs package. Normally though the starting dosage is a tablet of 5mg daily. The dose should be taken once every morning most preferably with breakfast or just after breakfast.
Where you forget to take a dose, take it at the next meal but never take two doses at a time. Instead, you should skip the forgotten dose.
Usage
Glibenclamide is works as an antidiabetic drug by regulating of blood sugar levels on patients with diabetes type 2. That is, the drug causes the beta cells in the pancreas to produce insulin. Consequently, the increased insulin causes a decrease in blood sugar levels. It is commonly used in diabetes type 2 patients who are overweight .
The drug may be used together with other antidiabetic drugs. Care should however be taken to check for the drug’s interaction with other drugs such as laxatives and ACE inhibitors. Notably, for better results, Glibenclamide is prescribed alongside changes in the diet.
Side effects
Some of the side effects are low blood sugar. The symptoms for low blood sugar are, difficulty in concentration, excessive hunger pangs and abnormal tiredness. In less common cases, a patient will experience liver problems. The symptoms herein are abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, jaundice and darkened urine.
The common side effects however are,
• weight gain
• jaundice
• skin rashes
Precautions
If on the drug, a patient should avoid using alcohol as this causes the symptoms of low blood sugar less noticeable. More so, patients who are intolerant to some sugars should only use the drug after consulting the doctor because the drug contains some amounts of lactose. Glibenclamide tablets should also not be used during;
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Diabetic coma or precoma
