Generic Synthroid (Levothyroxine)

Levothyroxine is a type of drug used to treat hypothyroidism. This medication works by increasing the production of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is very important in the physical and mental development of children. In adults, thyroid hormone is important in sustaining a balance between mental and physical activity. This hormone is limited in persons who have undergone surgery and chemotherapy. You can use this drug to treat other thyroid complications such as goiter. 

 

Take this drug as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Levothyroxine is taken by mouth normally once a day. Take this medication on an empty stomach half an hour before taking breakfast. You can it with or without food. For capsules, take this medicine with a glass of water. Infants are however given the tablet form of Levothyroxine. Break the tablet and mix it in 10milliliters of water. Give the infant this solution using a spoon or a dropper. You can also use infant formula to get a good solution of Levothyroxine. This dose is administered depending on your medical condition, weight, response to treatment and test results from the laboratory. 

 

To achieve the best out of Levothyroxine, use it frequently. Take it the same time each day. Do not change medication without seeking medical advice from your doctor. Avoid medications that are rich in antacids, iron and colestipol. If you are using this medications, take Levothyroxine four hours before you take them. Tell your doctor if the symptoms persist. 

 

Some of the side effects of using Levothyroxine include: sweating, headache, hair loss, seizures, diarrhea, uneven heartbeat, chest pain, unusual tiredness, swelling of feet and arms and trouble breathing. 

 

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if: 

• You have heart problems

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding

• You are allergic to the drug or

• You have any allergies
