Generic Zofran (Ondansetron)

Zofran is a type of medication used with other drugs to relieve nausea or vomiting brought about by chemotherapy. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy occur during cancer treatment. This drug is also used to prevent nausea after other surgeries. It works by stopping or blocking serotonin, a natural body substance that causes vomiting. 

 

Zofran is taken by mouth normally thirty minutes before treatment commences. To prevent nausea, take this medicine one or two hours before you start chemotherapy. If you are using a liquid form of Zofran, use a special measuring spoon to get the correct dose. Avoid using a household spoon since you may not get the exact dose. To prevent vomiting after surgery, take this medication orally one hour prior to the surgery. You can take Zofran with or without food. Your doctor or surgeon may advice you what to take before chemotherapy. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Ondansetron can be taken three times a day until radiation treatment or chemotherapy is over. The maximum dose for patients with acute liver problems is 8 milligrams per day. 

 

Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Remember to take it the same time every day. Do not increase the dose more than prescribed. Also, do not stop medication unless your doctor says so. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. 

 

The common side effect of using Zofran are: dizziness, constipation, tiredness, headache and drowsiness. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these serious side effects: blurred vision, stomach pain, muscle joint, fainting, chest pain, uneven heartbeat and hallucinations. 

 

Before taking Zofran, inform your doctor if:

• You have liver disease

• You have allergies

• You have undergone recent surgery

• You have heart problems

• You are pregnant
