Generic Dostinex is the name given to the drug, Cabergoline which is an agonist of dopamine receptors more precisely D2 receptors. It functions by blocking the secretion of prolactin hormone from pituitary gland. Mainly cabergoline is an ergot derivative and inhibits the function of prolactin cells in pituitary gland.
Dosage:
The dosage of the drug is adjusted according to the associated condition of the patients. The maximum dosage given for hyperprolactinemia is 1 mg twice in a week however it is tried to maintain the patient on a lower dosage of 0.25 mg two times a week. The drug is usually continued for six months. To keep a check on its function, certain tests like chest x rays, prolactin levels in the blood, kidney function test, ECG, etc. If you accidently miss a dosage, contact your doctor.
Usage:
Generic Dostinex is mainly used to treat the conditions which are associated with high level of prolactin hormone in the body or hyperprolactinemia. Causes of high prolactin levels include a tumor in brain mainly pituitary gland producing prolactin i.e. prolactinoma or idiopathic conditions.
Also, it is used for Parkinson’s disease, acromegaly, amenorrhea, anovulation, galactorrhea etc.
Contraindications:
If you are allergic to the drug or its ingredients like ergot and other derivatives do not use the drug. If you are suffering from the valvular disease or high blood pressure, cabergoline is contraindicated. In a case of any history of fibrotic diseases of any organ like kidneys, lungs, heart etc you have to be careful while using it.
Also owing to its interference with the actions of certain drugs, it is not used when you are taking drugs from groups like thioaxnthenes, butyrophenone, metoclopramide, triptan etc.

Generic Dostinex causes the following side effects that can be from mild to severe:

• Allergic reactions including hives, rash, shortness of breath, chest tightness, itching, swelling of mouth and lips etc.

• Cough
• Mood changes
• Swelling of hands, legs, feet etc
• Decreased urination
• Changes in eye function

Precaution:
If you have allergies to certain drugs, foods, tell your doctor. Also if you are taking any sort of supplements or over the counter medicines let your doctor know. Do not take it while you are taking alcohol.
Hypertensive patients should take cabergoline with precautions. Also if you are suffering from liver problems or heart disease tell your doctor. As it interacts with macrolides antibiotics, tell your doctor if you are taking any such medication.
The drug can affect pregnancy so let your physician know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to get pregnant.
