Generic Prograf (Tacrolimus)

Product Information:

Tacrolimus is used to treat organ transplants such as heart, kidney and liver transplant. This drug assists the body to accept foreign body parts that have been transplanted into the body. Tacrolimus belongs to the immunosuppressant class of drugs. It works by abating your immune system to help the body accept new organs obtained from other persons. The drug can also be used to treat Crohn disease and rejection of other transplant organs.

Dosage:

Take the drug as directed by your physician. Dosage is administered based on your medical condition, weight, response to treatment and blood results. Normally it is taken every twelve hours with or without food. Take this medication frequently to get the most  out of it. What's more is to ensure you take the dose the same time each day.

Usage:

When taking Tacrolimus, avoid drinking or eating grapefruit juice. This is because it increases the levels of this medication in your blood. Do not reduce nor increase the dosage unless the doctor says so. In addition, avoid consuming this drug without your doctor's permission.  If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor.

Side Effects:

Taking Tacrolimus might give you minor or adverse side effects. Minor side effects are: nausea, loss of appetite, headache, stomach upset, trouble sleeping and shaking. Some of the serious side effects are swelling of the legs and arms, severe stomach pain, easy bleeding, yellowing of the eyes and skin, hearing loss, fast heartbeats, muscle cramps and fainting. If you experience such signs, seek medical assistance right away.

Before you take this medication, inform your doctor if:

You have a serious allergic reaction

You suffer from high blood pressure

You endure frequent urination

You have other allergies

You have liver or kidney disease

You have diabetes

You have heart problems

You have low levels of magnesium

You are pregnant or breastfeeding

You are using other prescriptions
