Generic Zovirax Cream (Aciclovir)

Aciclovir is used to treat various viruses. They include: shingles, chickenpox and cold sores located around the mouth. This medication is also used to reduce the number of outbreaks of genital herpes that you may have. This is an antiviral drug and not a cure for the viruses. Aciclovir helps reduce pain hence decreasing itching. Your sores heal fast and there are minimal outbreaks in future. It is prudent to continue to take this medication even when you feel well. Aciclovir helps reduce the risk of spreading the virus to other parts of the body. 

 

Take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. Aciclovir is taken by mouth with or without food. You can take it two to five times a day. When using this drug, make sure you drink a lot of water. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children however, it is based on weight. If you are using a liquid form of this medicine, use a special measuring spoon to get the correct dose. Avoid using a household spoon as it will not give you the exact dose. Use this medication immediately you notice the first symptoms of shingles, cold sores and chickenpox. 

 

Take Aciclovir regularly to get the most from it. Remember to take it the same time every day. Do not discontinue or stop medication without your doctor's approval. Also, do not change your dose even when you feel well. Take this medication at evenly spaced intervals.  Store this medicine at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. 

 

The common side effects of Aciclovir include: vomiting, headache, diarrhea and nausea. Some of the serious side effects of this drug are: hallucinations, kidney problems, trouble speaking and confusion. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these symptoms. 

 

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if:

• You have kidney problems

• You suffer from HIV/AIDS

• You drink alcohol

• You are taking other medications

• You are pregnant
