Generic Tegretol XR (Carbamazepine)

Tegretol is a type of medication used to treat some types of seizures such as mixed and partial convulsion disorders. This drug belongs to the anticonvulsant class of medicines. It works by reducing nerve impulses that bring about pain and seizures. The drug is also used to treat trigeminal neuralgia. 

 

Take this drug as prescribed by your doctor. The normal dose for trigeminal neuralgia is 100mg taken orally two times a day. If you are taking this drug in form of a suspension, take it four times a day. The maximum  dose you can take is 1200mg per day to relieve pain. This may vary based on your condition. Follow instructions on your prescription label. In some instances, your doctor might change the dosage to ensure you achieve the best results. Avoid taking Tegretol in large or small amounts than directed by your  doctor. 

 

This tablet is swallowed whole. Do not chew, crush or break an extended-release tablet. If you are taking the oral suspension, make sure you shake well before use. Use a medicine cup or a special measuring spoon to get the correct dose. If you lack one, you can always request for the same from your pharmacist. When taking Tegretol, you may need to schedule regular blood tests with your doctor. Also, when using the chewable tablet, ensure you chew it before swallowing. The drug may take up to four weeks before your symptoms recover. Store  Tegretol in a dry, cool place away from heat, moisture and light. 

 

Inform your doctor at once if you encounter these: swelling of the face, tongue and lips, sore throat, nosebleeds, headache, unusual weakness, confusion, slurred speech, nausea, pale skin, irregular heartbeats, blisters, peeling of the skin, dizziness and trouble moving your feet. 

 

Before taking Tegretol, tell your doctor if you have:

• Mental disorders

• Glaucoma

• Liver disease

• Kidney disease

• Heart disease

• High blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol

• Thyroid disorder
