Generic Topamax (Topiramate)

Topamax is a drug that is used to treat seizures in children and adults. This medicine is usually referred to as an  anticonvulsant. Doctors have advised that this medicine be used in children who are at least two years and above. Topamax is also used to treat and prevent migraines. It works by reducing the number of attacks you have when suffering from migraines. It is best suited for adults and teenagers who aged twelve years and above. The drug is also used to treat health conditions not stated here. 

 

Take the medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Topamax can be taken with or without food. Follow all the instructions as provided by your doctor. You doctor may start you at a low dose and increase it gradually to get the full benefits. Do not increase or reduce the medicine without your doctor's permission. Swallow the capsule as a whole. Therefore, avoid chewing, crushing or even breaking it into pieces. Wash your hands with soap and water if you come into contact with the powder from the capsule. Use the medicine regularly to get the best results. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, open it and sprinkle a spoonful of applesauce on it. Swallow it immediately and get rid of the empty capsule. 

 

When using Topamax, drink plenty of water to avoid developing kidney stones. Continue taking the medication even when you feel okay. Stopping medication may increase seizures. In addition, inform your doctor if you experience adverse side effects and when your condition persists. Store this medicine at room temperature away from heat, moisture and light. When the bottle is not in use, close it tightly. 

 

Topamax has the following side effects: uneven heartbeats, confusion, unusual weakness, blurred vision, loss of appetite, diarrhea, headache, cold feeling in arms and legs and rapid weight loss. 

 

Before using this medication, tell your physician or doctor if:

• You have diabetes

• You have glaucoma

• You have kidney disease

• You have liver disease

• You are suffering from depression

• You experience difficulty breathing
