Generic Xenical (Orlistat)

Orlistat is used to help obese persons reduce weight. It can only be used upon a doctor's approval. This medicine works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down fats in your diet. Your body gets rid of this fat in your bowel movement. The drug is very effective such that it is difficult to gain back weight lost in a short period. Getting rid of excess weight helps you keep off deadly diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. When using this drug, stay away from foods that are rich in calories. 

 

Read the Medication Guide carefully before you start taking Orlistat. Do this especially when buying over the counter drugs. Orlistat is taken by mouth with food. It is taken during a meal that has fat. You can also opt to take this medication one hour after the meal. Take Orlistat three times a day. In case you skip a meal, do the same for the dose. When using this medication avoid taking or consuming food that has more than 30% calories. Also, make sure you take a proper diet with fat, carbohydrates and proteins spread evenly. 

 

Do not increase or reduce the dose unless your doctor says so. Your condition may worsen or even worse you will increase your risk to side effects. When using Orlistat,  take multivitamin supplements at least two hours before or after taking the medicine. The best time to take Orlistat is before going to bed. If you are using cyclosporine, take it three hours before using Orlistat. The drug takes about two weeks before you enjoy its full benefits. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve. 

 

This medication has the following side effects: increased number of bowel movements and gas. The serious side effects of Orlistat are: nausea, severe stomach pain, dizziness, trouble breathing, itching and yellowing of the skin. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these side effects. 

 

Before taking Orlistat, tell your doctor if: 

• You suffer from seizures

• You have gall bladder problems

• You have kidney problems

• You suffer from bulimia or anorexia nervosa

• You are diabetic

• You are pregnant
