Generic Zerit (Stavudine)

Stavudine is a type of medication used with other HIV medications to regulate HIV infection in the body. This medicine belongs to the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) class of drugs. It works by lowering the amount of virus and infections in your blood. This way, your immune system can work better. When taking this drug, practise safe sex by using latex condoms and dental dams during all sexual activity, continue taking other HIV medications as directed by your doctor and finally avoid sharing personal items such as razors, needles and toothbrushes. Stavudine can also be used to reduce the risk of HIV infection after accidentally getting in contact with the virus. 

 

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Read the Medication Guide carefully before you start using this drug. For more information on Stavudine, contact your pharmacist or doctor. Take this drug by mouth with or without food. This medication is usually taken every twelve hours as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition, weight and response to therapy. Take this medicine at evenly spaced intervals. Consider taking it the same time every day. 

 

Do not take this drug in large or small amounts other than prescribed. Do not miss or skip the dosage even for a short time. This may increase the amount of virus in your blood making the infection even more resistant. Continue to take HIV medications as well when using Stavudine. Remember to refill your medication before you run out. Store this medicine at room temperature. Keep in mind to store it away from children and pets. 

 

The possible common side effects of Stavudine are: diarrhea and headache. This medication has the following serious side effects: unexplained weight loss, trouble breathing, cough, joint pain, fever, cold feeling in the arms and feet, rash, drooping face, slurred speech and irregular heartbeat. Seek immediate medical help if you notice these. 

 

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if:

• You consume alcohol

• You have gallbladder problems

• You are pregnant
